Office furniture manufacturers and automotive suppliers operate in different markets, but face the same question: how do you serve many customers with individual requirements without starting from zero every time? The furniture industry found answers early.
Why a look at the furniture industry is worthwhile
Warum der Blick in die Möbelindustrie lohnt
At first glance, a desk system and a lighting module have little in common. Structurally, the tasks are similar:
- The business runs on customer projects, each with its own requirements.
- The number of variants grows with every customer, and the cost of variety often stays invisible.
- Price pressure demands reuse, customers demand individuality.
- Products live long and are developed further over years, while the organization thinks in projects.
We know this tension from more than twenty years of practice in the office furniture industry, from engineering and product management to product strategy. Three lessons from that time carry over to suppliers.
Lesson 1: Standards instead of one-off solutions
Lektion 1: Standards statt Einzellösungen
The most effective answer to growing variety is a scalable standard: a modular kit of a few well-maintained building blocks from which customer solutions can be assembled. What matters is what you standardize and what you do not.
- Standardize what the customer does not see. Interfaces, connections and basic structures belong in the kit. What distinguishes customers stays freely designable.
- Run the standard as a product. A kit needs maintenance, further development and a person who decides what goes in. Otherwise it grows into a list of variants.
- Standardize concepts too. Not only the component, but also the way it is planned, sold and used belongs to the standard.
Was Kunden unterscheidet, bleibt frei gestaltbar.
This is not a question of industry but of organization. A kit only emerges when someone takes responsibility for the product beyond the individual project.
Lesson 2: Think product and concept together
Lektion 2: Produkt und Konzept gemeinsam denken
In the furniture industry, a product rarely sells on its own. It is planned, communicated and used as part of a concept: from planning aids to training sales and trade partners to communication. Whoever develops the product without this context gets a good part, but no market success.
For suppliers this means: a technical product needs a story that customers understand and sales teams can explain. That includes:
- a clear benefit that can be said in one sentence
- training material and arguments for sales and customers
- a product name and presence that set the product apart from the list of variants
That is product marketing at its best. It does not happen after development but alongside it, and needs the same person as the link.
Lesson 3: One owner across the whole lifecycle
Lektion 3: Eine Verantwortung über den ganzen Lebenszyklus
A product that stays on the market for years needs someone who leads it over that time: from the idea through market launch to further development and phase-out. In project logic, responsibility ends with the handover. In product logic, it only really begins there.
Three things belong to this, which we see again and again in practice:
- A multi-year development plan. It defines which products are developed further and when, and gives projects a direction.
- Key figures per product. Together with controlling, it becomes clear what a product delivers over its lifecycle and what its variants cost.
- Market observation as a permanent task. Competitors and customer requirements are analyzed continuously, not only at project start.
Without this ownership, every organization slips back into the logic of the loudest customer.
What suppliers take away
Was Zulieferer daraus mitnehmen
The three lessons transfer directly to automotive Tier-1/2:
| In the furniture industry | At the supplier |
|---|---|
| Modular kit of standardized building blocks | Platform from which customer projects are configured |
| Concept and training belong to the product | Product message and sales material emerge alongside development |
| Product ownership across the lifecycle | Product owners for platforms, software and electronics |
| Multi-year development plan | Roadmap that leads customer projects instead of following them |
| Key figures per product | Margin, reuse rate and variant cost per product |
| In der Möbelindustrie | Beim Zulieferer |
|---|---|
One difference remains: in the automotive business the OEM sets the pace, and request, nomination and series launch follow its schedule. That makes platform decisions more important, not less, because only a prepared platform can respond fast enough to a request.
Conclusion and next step
Fazit und nächster Schritt
The furniture industry shows that variety and efficiency can be combined when standards, concept and product ownership come together. The principle applies wherever customer projects turn into recurring products.
